Dr. Cary Mackey is a Hampton Roads native whose career in animal care began right here at Denbigh Animal Hospital, as the “kennel girl” in 2008. She went on to earn her undergraduate and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from Auburn University. (War Eagle!)
She started her career in Atlanta in 2015, practicing for six years at Paces Ferry Veterinary Clinic and as an in-home hospice and end-of-life care veterinarian with Lap of Love. In March 2020 she returned to the Old Dominion and Denbigh Animal Hospital, and has loved serving her hometown community ever since.
Dr. Mackey practices alongside Dr. Joann Cork, DVM and Dr. Linda Bruce, DVM, and shares her beautiful life with her husband, two daughters, a German shorthaired pointer mix named Maple, and three cats.

I have been bringing my dogs here for years. I can not say enough good things about them. I can not choose who I want my dog to see because I love them both equally the same. Dr. Mackey and Dr. Cork and I know they both truly care about my dog. I feel they love animals as much as I love my animal. The prices are fair and everything is explained to you and they listen to you. The front staff is so friendly and all the attendants are knowledgeable and very kind. You can not go wrong choosing this clinic. They have new weekend appointments and try to work around your schedule. They are just plain outstanding.
My dog has been seen here off and on (due to moving) for the past 6 years. The staff has always been amazing. As I recently lost my beloved Boxer of almost 13 years, I called them to tell them she passed. I received a sympathy card in the mail today which just confirmed their level of service and compassion. My dog needed to be seen for basic shots and a check up but it was already late due to Covid-19. This was the ONLY place in the local cities that made him a priority and saw him within a few days. We recently moved to the area and this is definitely his new vet. The doctor, nurses, and staff were all kind, knowledgeable, and helpful. My good boy loves them and they love him.
